My time has come to say good-bye to Perry Public Library as my retirement at the end of April is quickly approaching.   It is difficult to put into words how much serving as Library Director for the past 30 years has meant to me.  It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the dedicated staff, trustees, and Friends of Perry Public Library, as well as to serve and interact with the many library patrons all these years.

I want especially to note that having a staff of people who love books and are avid readers is a priceless asset to any community, and we can be proud of that here at our library. The staff understands that serving the patrons is our top priority, and they bring their many skills and years of experience to the job every single day.  Thank you!

The library world continues to grow and change, and we have experienced many, many changes during my years at this library. At all times we have had the wonderful support of the Pioneer Library System—both through the System staff and also the member libraries.  It is a network that works in so many different ways, and I have always called it the backbone of our public libraries.

Library trustees both past and present have taken their roles very seriously in order to provide excellent library service to the Perry community.  I thank these volunteers for their time and attention to all those tasks that keep libraries running smoothly.  A chart of Perry Public Library trustees has been on display at the library since our 100th anniversary celebration last fall as a reminder that we value their efforts.

Where would we be without our Friends?  Since its beginning in 1986, the Friends of Perry Public Library group has provided many hours of volunteer help and financial support to our library. I have enjoyed working with them and will continue to do so in my retirement. Their service continues with National Library Week, April 12-18, 2015, and the annual membership drive.

With the impossible task of summarizing my 30 years at Perry Public Library, I simply invite any who are able to come to my Retirement Open House to be held at the library on Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 2 to 5 PM.

What am I reading now?  This occasional column usually ends with that question; and you will find me reading, among other books, the upcoming titles for the Book Discussion Group:  The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown, for discussion on Tuesday, April 28, 7 PM and Deep Down Dark, by Hector Tobar, for discussion on Tuesday, May 26, 7 PM.

Library hours: Mon. & Wed., 1-7 PM; Tues. & Th., 10 AM to 7 PM; Fri., 1-5 PM; Sat., 9 AM to 1 PM.  Website:
